Veronica Medina's Testimony of Life as an Impoverished NTCC Missionary

Following is a comment made by Veronica Medina, former ntcc missionary to Puerto Rico, ntcc bible school / seminary instructor, and ntcc minister. This comment appeared on The Dispatch, a Washington state online newspaper that ran a series of 5 articles about the NTCC by reporter Bruce Smith.

Hi Bruce,

My name is Veronica Medina. I attended NTCC from 1971 to 1985. My husband and I always used our own money to move where ever RW Davis thought we should minister. Our last move was to Puerto Rico. We were led to believe that the organization would support us as missionaries there. We sold everything we had, packed up our 2 very young children and went there with great hope. After we paid our own airplane fare there and spent all the money we had to get established, we asked and did get money from NTCC to take care of some deposits needed. It was around $700. Little did I know that there would be no more money. It came to the point where "we had no money", not even enough to feed our children. I will never forget my sorrow when we attended a church down the street and my son who was 5 years old, was brought to me from Children's Church because he had the "dry heaves". You see, he had no food in his stomach to vomit. To make a long story short, my husband got a job working for $25 a day. We ended up getting (and I am ashamed to say it)  on welfare. I admit I didn't tell NTCC that part because I knew we would have to pay "tithes" on that money, but we needed it desperately. My husband and I both got very ill while in Puerto Rico and as a result did not have money for rent. I wrote to the leadership in NTCC explaining our plight. Did they respond? Oh yes, with a $100 LOAN. That was the last straw. We resigned and wanted nothing more to do with them. By the way, the explanation given to everyone was "the Medina's left for filthy lucre". I need to tell you, at the time I thought we were a single incident of their cruelty. But I have since learned that this is a pattern for them. They have no conscious when it comes to their ministers and missionaries. My story is just one story out of many.

By the way - life only got better after we left.
